Neighbours living in an area of Wallasey were "unsettled" this evening after a member of the public brought a suspected WWII bomb to a police station. At around 2.40pm on Monday, January 12, a person attended Wallasey Police Station on Manor Road carrying what was believed to be an unexploded bomb.
A large cordon was put in place on Manor Road between Withens Lane and Wimbledon Street as a precaution while the device was examined. Police confirmed the station was not evacuated and remained open throughout the incident while enquiries were carried out.
Those living nearby said they had been advised by police not to leave their homes, with many describing their concerns as the situation unfolded.
One man, who lives next to the police station, said: "I live right next to the police station and if anything happens my house would be the first to go up."
Another local said: "This seems like it’s happening all the time now. It just makes you wonder how many are actually out there. It is concerning, especially being so close to a school. It's a bit unsettling to be honest. I'm surprised no one has been evacuated if there's an unexploded bomb right next door."
During the closure, vehicles were allowed to leave the cordon, but drivers attempting to enter Manor Road and Wimbledon Street were turned away.
Bus operator Arriva North West also warned customers of service disruptions.
In a statement, the company said: "Due to a police incident on Manor Road, Service 423 diverted along Seabank Road, Steel Avenue, Penkett Road and Rake Lane before rejoining its route at Liscard. This is in both directions."
The road has since reopened.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm there are road closures in Wallasey this afternoon, Monday 12 January, following reports of a possible unexploded ordnance."
"At around 2.40pm a member of the public attended at Wallasey police station on Manor Road with a suspected WWII bomb."
"Manor Road has been closed as a precaution while the device is further examined."
"At this stage the police station has not been closed and enquiries remain ongoing."
